Ryan Smyth scratch a indicator of Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins's requirement for all-out effort

EDMONTON?-?

The reason Ryan Smyth watched Monday?s game from the press box is because Dallas Eakins didn?t think it wise to bring up five players from the AHL to replace all the guys he wanted to shelve.

The Oilers head coach said there were ?four or five? forwards who could have been yanked from the lineup, and still might be if their habits don?t change.

?I could have had my pick of any one of them,? said Eakins, who made good on his promise to start rattling cages if he didn?t like what he saw, and he most certainly didn?t in Edmonton?s 6-2 loss in Vancouver.

?I?ve challenged those players to be better.?

This includes everyone, regardless of where a player might think he belongs on the depth chart. Another one of Eakins?s promises is there will be no favourites.

?I?ve already warned the players about this, it doesn?t matter to me what the fan base thinks of you, if they hold you in high esteem, you have to have results,? said Eakins. ?If not, you?re going to be held accountable. Smytty?s out (Monday), we?ll see how the rest of the week goes.?

The press box is just one of the weapons at Eakins?s disposal as he attempts to change the culture of a loser franchise.

?You use everything you can,? he said. ?There?s the employment of having different voices go at them, maybe a teammate or the assistant coaches. There?s a firm kick in the butt. There?s a pulling back of ice time. There?s embarrassing them in a video session. It?s whatever it takes.

?That?s where you have to get to know the guys and figure out what works best with them.?

In the meantime, Smyth will take the first bullet from a coach whose loaded pistol will be trained on players who aren?t delivering 100% effort this season.

?The reason it?s Ryan is I knew he would handle it professionally. I knew that he wouldn?t have a lip or go into a dark place with it because he?s such a good leader and teammate,? said Eakins. ?Sometimes being a good leader and a teammate goes against you and that?s what?s happened in this instance.

?But if we don?t have some other players pick up their game, and do it quickly, they?ll be out of the lineup.?

Smyth took the news like a good soldier.

?It?s never easy, but it?s a matter of maintaining my focus and putting the team in front of myself, that?s where this is at right now,? he said.

?Obviously I want to play, but it?s a coach?s decision and this is what he feels is best for the team right now.

?It?s a tough pill to swallow, for sure. I think everybody knows that I?m a competitor and I want to play. I have a lot of fight left in me. It?s easy to say I?m a little older, but I felt really good in training camp and I have a lot to prove here.?

Smyth will say that his situation was handled much better this time than when Ralph Krueger sat him down last season.

?Absolutely. It?s never an easy conversation to have ? but it was dealt very in (good) manner, both sides. They know how I feel and I know where they?re coming from.?

93% Still Mine

All Critics (55) | Top Critics (21) | Fresh (51) | Rotten (4)

Growing old together can't be easy, but in this case, it's certainly beautiful.

Writer-director Michael McGowan covers all the bases here -- the long-standing romance between the aging couple, the hovering concerns of their son and daughter, the constant head-butting with the building inspector -- with well-paced confidence.

Writer-director Michael McGowan (Saint Ralph) shows affinity for the subtle undercurrents of a long, happy marriage, but the friction between Cromwell and the government bureaucracy stays one-note.

Bring a handkerchief, or possibly a bedsheet, to "Still Mine"; this fact-based, beautifully acted drama could wring tears from a brick.

[A] tough-minded tearjerker, based on a true story ...

It is about a husband and wife, partners through six decades, grappling with issues of aging, and how to spend what time together remains with grace and dignity.

Lovely performances by Cromwell and Bujold, as well as those playing their extended family of children and friends, are understated yet truthful. And it's good to be reminded that love that withstands a lifetime is a most precious thing.

In essence, it's a TV movie with all the simplifications that suggests. But it's a TV movie raised to something more by Cromwell and Bujold.

Hopefully, [James] Cromwell will have more highlights in the December of his years, but Still Mine is one to be proud of.

Still Mine is sentimental and often hokey, but it's a wonderful showcase for veteran character actor Cromwell.

When Still Mine's title reflects the sincerity and adoration we witness between two very private people - rather than a declaration of ownership - McGowan's movie is worthy of the wonderful cast he's attracted.

Takes full advantage of the ornery authority and distinctive Thomas Hart Bentonesque physiognomy of its star, James Cromwell, in a rare lead role.

An Occupy Wall Street supporter is part of the most conservative indie film you'll see all year. Still Mine is a heartbreaking classic no matter your ideology, though.

The man-against-the-system story is good and hopeful, but the love story between senior citizens is the reason to watch "Still Mine."

Like his character, Cromwell has the timber to build great things and make it last.

Still Mine mourns days gone by without being mawkish and meditates on age without being maudlin.

It's a tender, sharply observed drama.

Hits the high notes even though the tone of sorrow and frustration does not vary.

For those who thought "Amour" too sadistic or the recent "Unfinished Song" too sentimental, here's a senior love story with the realities of aging that falls right in the middle.

Clancy?s book sales expected to spike following author?sdeath?

Books

Author Tom Clancy's books are expected to see a surge in popularity following his death Oct. 1, 2013.

David Burnett / Reuters

Author Tom Clancy's books are expected to see a surge in popularity following his death Oct. 1, 2013.

Tom Clancy?s death this week is expected to boost popularity for the author of complex military thrillers such as "The Hunt for Red October" and "Clear and Present Danger."?And it could prompt an early release of his next novel.

Fans were paying tribute to the author, who died Tuesday at the age of 66, at bookstores and websites, including Clancy?s Facebook page.

?I expect there to be a pretty significant spike in sales for sure,? said Jonathan Stolper, vice president and general manager of Nielsen BookScan, a weekly measure of retail book sales.

BookScan data reflecting the period immediately following Clancy?s death won?t be available for another week, but the hardcover and Kindle version of the author?s forthcoming "Command Authority," scheduled for release Dec. 3, were trending up on Amazon?s list of best-selling novels.

Clancy?s death will ?absolutely lead to a short-term burst in sales. We saw the same thing with Julia Child, Pope John Paul and others,? said Michael Norris, senior analyst at Simba Information.

?Part of it is the author?s name is in the news, and when an author dies, it does give people a chance to read about that person?s life and their history with writing,? Norris said.

The phenomenon reaches across the arts. Rock group Queen?s 1975 hit ?Bohemian Rhapsody? topped the U.K. charts a second time after singer Freddie Mercury?s death in 1991, and Michael Jackson albums held nine of the top 10 spots on the Billboard Top Pop Catalog Albums chart the first full week in 2009 after the King of Pop?s death (the remaining album in the top 10 was by the Jackson 5).

To what extent Clancy?s death will affect sales depends, in part, on how many copies of his books already exist to meet the demand. Although e-books are increasing in popularity, paperback is still the most popular format overall, Norris said.

?Every publisher in this situation is thinking ? ?Do we have enough inventory??? Stolper said.

Norris suggested that strong pre-sale demand for "Command Authority" could prompt the publisher to accelerate its release date, a common practice when an event triggers a surge of interest in an upcoming book.

?When there?s an opportunity to get a book out quicker, often they can just buckle down and get it done,? Norris said. ?They could probably get something out by the end of this month.?

Erica Glass, spokeswoman for publisher G.P. Putnam?s Sons, an imprint of Penguin Group, said, ?Nothing has been announced.??

Brazilian police stop Indians from storming Congress

By Anthony Boadle

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazilian police used pepper spray to stop hundreds of protesting Indians from storming Congress on Wednesday, clamping down on the second day of indigenous rights marches.

Tribes across Brazil blocked highways and occupied government offices to oppose what they see as a steady undermining of their rights to ancestral lands by farmers supported by politicians in disputes that have occasionally turned violent.

"We have lost lots of land and they want to take away what we have left," said Mayal? Txucarramae, a young Kayap? leader from the Xing? reservation in Mato Grosso state, one of about 1,000 indigenous demonstrators camped out in front of Congress.

Indians wearing headdresses and body paint and carrying spears, bows and arrows expressed their anger in war dances outside ministry buildings in Brazil's capital and then tried to invade Congress, before being stopped by police.

During a similar protest in April, members of some 70 tribes barged into the lower house of Congress, delaying a debate on indigenous policy. Brazilian police, who have faced bouts of social unrest since the country experienced massive protests in June against corruption and poor government services, were less permissive this time.

But the deputy speaker of the lower chamber of Congress, Andre Vargas, agreed to meet with a delegation of Indians, including the Kayap? leader, and vowed to try to stop a constitutional amendment from reaching the floor that would weaken native land rights.

On Tuesday, Speaker Henrique Eduardo Alves said he would delay forming a committee to study the proposal, which would give Congress, rather than the federal government's Indian affairs office, the power to create indigenous reservations.

President Dilma Rousseff, accused by the Indians of siding with farmers in the disputes over native lands, said on Twitter she opposed the amendment and would encourage her supporters in Congress to vote against it.

"She is just trying to look good," said Txucarramae.

The protests that shook Brazil in June may have helped the Indian cause by making the country's politicians more sensitive to popular demands, the Indian leader said.

'UNDER UNPRECEDENTED ASSAULT'

The Indian protests were occurring on the 25th anniversary of Brazil's constitution, which is considered one of the world's most generous in terms of allocating land to natives.

But an article in the document stating that Indians have the right to occupy their ancestral lands is under fire from the country's powerful farm lobby, which is arguing for the popularly elected Congress to have a say in the creation of reserves.

"The Indian rights enshrined in the 1988 constitution are under unprecedented assault today by the Brazilian Congress, aided and abetted by the Rousseff government and the farm lobby," said Christian Poirier, an activist with Amazon Watch, a human rights and environmental organization based in California.

Indian land rights are also threatened by other legislative proposals in Congress that seek to facilitate investment in resource industries and agribusiness in Brazil, Poirier said.

Tensions between farmers and Indians have run high since the government evicted 7,000 farmers and their families from an Indian territory in Mato Grosso state earlier this year, spurring violent protests.

In May, two Terena Indians were shot and killed when police tried to remove them from a congressman's cattle ranch on disputed property in Mato Grosso do Sul.

In other parts of Brazil on Wednesday, Patax? and Tupinamb? Indians blocked roads in the state of Bahia, and Guarani demonstrators stopped traffic in Parana state and occupied the government's land reform office in Porto Alegre. An Indian protest snarled traffic on a main avenue of Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city.

US facing first government shutdown in 17 years

Washington (AFP) - Lawmakers have one final day to try to prevent the first US government shutdown in 17 years, but a deal appeared remote Monday as congressional leaders showed little intent to compromise.

With Congress going into crunch sessions ahead of an 11:59 pm (0359 GMT Tuesday) deadline, a House Republican leader offered a glimmer of hope when he hinted that his party could offer a new plan that might pass muster in the Democratic-held Senate.

"I think the House will get back together in enough time, send another provision not to shut the government down, but to fund it, and it will have a few other options in there for the Senate to look at again," number three House Republican Kevin McCarthy told Fox News Sunday.

Congress must pass a stopgap funding measure before the new fiscal year begins Tuesday or much of the US federal government will close down.

The procedure became dramatically more complicated when Republicans linked the budget legislation to an attempt to thwart President Barack Obama's health care law.

The impasse is already affecting global markets: In Asian trading on Monday oil prices tumbled, markets slumped and the Japanese yen jumped in value while the dollar weakened, mostly due to fears that a budget deal will not be reached before a shutdown.

After the Senate passed a straightforward spending bill on Friday, the House countered after hours of debate Saturday by attaching amendments seeking a one-year delay to so-called Obamacare, as well as repeal of a medical device tax which helps fund the law.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who refused to call the chamber into session over the weekend despite the rapidly approaching deadline, warned before the vote that such a measure would be dead on arrival.

The White House also sharply rebuked the move, and warned that the president would veto it even if the Senate did approve it.

On Monday "the Senate will do exactly what we said we would do and reject these measures," Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson said."

"At that point, Republicans will be faced with the same choice they have always faced: put the Senate's clean funding bill on the floor and let it pass with bipartisan votes, or force a Republican government shutdown."

Republican McCarthy hinted that if the Senate rejects the measure as expected, the new House approach would still retain a provision "that I believe the Senate can accept, that will have fundamental changes into Obamacare."

That provision may well be the medical device tax. The Senate voted overwhelmingly to repeal the tax in March, but it was a non-binding budget resolution.

The Senate's number two Democrat, Dick Durbin, appeared open to the possibility.

"I'm willing to look at that, but not with a gun to my head, not with the prospect of shutting down the government," he told the CBS Sunday talk show "Face the Nation."

With Republicans and Democrats in a dangerous game of political chicken, the government was on the verge of ordering hundreds of thousands of federal workers to stay home.

As lawmakers traded blame, the Democratic leadership sounded resigned about a pending shutdown.

Asked if he believed government would shutter on Tuesday, Durbin grimly said "I'm afraid I do."

House Speaker John Boehner has been under intense pressure from his party's most conservative wing, a small band of lawmakers who forced Republican leaders to double down on their anti-Obamacare strategy.

Reid insisted that "the American people will not be extorted by Tea Party anarchists," referring to the ultra-conservative faction of Republicans.

But Boehner warned that if the Senate waits until hours before the deadline to vote, "it would be an act of breathtaking arrogance by the Senate Democratic leadership."

Roche immunotherapy drug may be 'game changer' in lung cancer

By Kate Kelland

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - An experimental Roche drug that seems to work particularly well against lung cancer in smokers may be a "game changer" for these normally difficult-to-treat patients, researchers said on Sunday.

Presenting detailed data from an early-stage trial of the drug, called MPDL3280A, in patients with a form of the disease called non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), investigators said what they had found was "great news for lung cancer patients".

Of 53 patients with NSCLC tumours treated with the drug, 23 percent saw their tumours shrink, according to results presented at the European Cancer Congress (ECC) in Amsterdam.

But the most encouraging numbers were among smokers, where the response rate was 26 percent compared with 10 percent of patients who had never smoked, said Professor Jean-Charles Soria of France's Institut Gustave Roussy, who led the study.

Lung cancer, which is usually caused by smoking, is extremely difficult to treat successfully and once it has started to spread to other parts of the body, it is incurable.

Roche's MPDL3280A is an engineered antibody that targets a protein called PD-L1 - a defence mechanism that tumours use to trick the immune system's T-cells into being inactive.

By blocking PD-L1, the drug allows the T-cells to wake up and recognize the cancer, and then grow and multiply to attack it more efficiently.

Rival drugmakers including Merck and Bristol-Myers Squibb are developing immunotherapy drugs in a similar class of drugs known as PD-1 inhibitors, also designed to mobilize the body's own immune system to fight cancer.

Soria's team suspected that because lung tumours in smokers have a higher rate of genetic mutations than tumours of lung cancer patients who have never smoked, their immune systems may be more likely to respond vigorously when PD-L1 is blocked.

So they drilled down into the data more closely, separating out the 81 percent of the 53 patients who were smokers or former smokers, and the 19 percent of them who were not.

"And bingo, this is the first targeted agent (drug) that shows more activity in smokers than in non-smokers," Soria told reporters in a briefing at the ECC.

Cora Sternberg, co-chair of the ECC's scientific committee and an oncologist at the San Camillo and Forlanini hospitals in Rome who was not involved in the study, said that although the results were from very early-stage trials, they suggested the drug was "definitely a game changer" in lung cancer.

Roche is also investigating MPDL3280A's potential for treating a range of other cancers, including melanoma skin cancer and kidney cancer, where it has already shown some promise in early trials.

Cornelis van de Velde, an oncologist at Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands and president of the European Cancer Organisation, said Soria's was an extremely important study for NSCLC patients, who currently have very few treatment options that make much impact on their disease.

"Hundreds of millions of euros have been spent chasing the dream of immunotherapy for lung cancer patients, but with zero results." he said. "These early findings..suggest that it has the potential to open new therapeutic approaches."
