Reprogramming patients' cells offers powerful new tool for studying, treating blood diseases

[unable to retrieve full-text content]First produced only in the past decade, human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are capable of developing into many or even all human cell types. Scientists have now reprogrammed skin cells from patients with rare blood disorders into iPSCs, highlighting the great promise of these cells in advancing understanding of those challenging diseases -- and eventually in treating them.

Loretta Lynn in 2012.

Country legend Loretta Lynn is mourning the loss of her eldest daughter, Betty Sue Lynn, who died on Monday from complications of emphysema, reports the Associated Press. She was 64.

A statement from the family released to the press revealed the details, indicating Betty Sue died in Waverly, Tenn, near her mother's ranch in Hurricane Mills.

Betty Sue is the second of Loretta's children to precede her in death; in 1984 her son Jack Benny Lynn, then 34, drowned on the family's property reported People magazine at the time. Betty and Jack's father, Oliver Vanetta Lynn, died in 1996.

"The Lynn Family appreciates all your prayers, love, and support of our family. Betty was Loretta's oldest daughter. Betty leaves two daughters Lynn Markworth and Audrey Dyer," a statement on Loretta's website indicated.

Loretta Lynn's life was portrayed her autobiography, "Coal Miner's Daughter," which was the title of one of her biggest hits. It was made into a movie in 1976.

Pursing a Legal Career in CJ - College of Criminal Justice

Kristy Bailey has been working in the legal field since she was a senior in high school and, in just seven short years, she has assisted with employment, family, and immigration cases -- and even a capital murder special prosecution.

Bailey is senior at Sam Houston State University, pursuing a criminal justice degree with hopes of attending law school in the spring or fall of 2014. With the many contacts she has made through years of working in legal firms and her recent internship with Conroe attorney Jo Miller, she is well on her way.

?I like to read, and I can comprehend legal jargon relatively easily,? said Bailey, who already has dozens of cases under her belt. ?I strive for excellence in the field. Through my current employer and other attorneys, I have made several contacts.?

Attorney reviewing legal documents.Bailey sounds like an attorney, easily negotiating the types of documents and proceedings that go into criminal and civil cases. She has worked with Miller, an employment and family law attorney, for three years, and opted to do an internship at the office by restructuring her position.

During her internship, Bailey assisted with drafting pleadings, motions, and discovery; attended and assisted attorneys in depositions; participated in continuing legal education classes; and communicated with clients, courts, experts and witnesses. In fact, she has been assigned to do a response for summary judgment in one of her cases, which will be reviewed by the attorney before being presented to the courts, and helped prepare an outside attorney to handle a deposition for the firm.

?She?s earned the respect of everyone in our office and at the courthouse,? said Miller. ?I am a big believer in education and I continue to educate myself. I believe you can?t just skate by on what you think and what you think you know. She has participated in continuing legal education classes designed for attorneys, which is well above what she is doing in her internship.?

Bailey began her legal career in high school with the law office of Randy Bays, serving as a legal secretary and filing clerk. She went on to work for an immigration attorney, ?which is completing a lot of paperwork,? before deciding to go to culinary school. She didn?t like it and returned to the law.

Photo illustrating child abuse with young boy holding up his hand defensively. While taking criminal justice classes at Sam Houston State University, she was serving as a legal assistant on a special team of private attorneys assigned to prosecute a capital murder case in Montgomery County. The case involved the beating death of a two year old girl at the hands of her mother?s boyfriend. As she recounted the facts of the case, her eyes begin to glisten as she recalled the cuts and bruises on the victim, who died from a lacerated liver, as well as the evening of partying and arguments that preceded the death.

?Our evidence wasn?t strong enough, and it was all circumstantial,? said Bailey, adding that the defendant plead guilty and is serving 20 years in prison. ?Especially in criminal law, where you have the highest burden of proof, you have to have your facts in line and you have to know your facts. You have to know your witnesses and you have to know how to ask the questions to get the right response. Justice isn?t always done ? he should have received the death penalty.?

Bailey displays the same intense, deliberate passion when discussing her volunteer work as a special advocate with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), which provides information to the courts in child abuse and neglect cases. She worked on the case of a four month old that suffered 14 rib fractures, a broken arm and a hole in the bottom of her mouth, allegedly from being placed to tightly in a car seat. ?I could not in a million years recommend that the Mom or Dad should have contact with the child,? she said.

Illustration of discrimation with a red figure kept outside a circle of white figures holding hands.Currently, she is working in employment and family law, cases which involve discrimination on the job or divorce and custody issues. Miller?s office is the plaintiff?s attorney for those who have been discriminated against by their employer based on their age, race, color, gender, sex, disability, the Family and Medical Leave Act or Fair Labor Standards Act. She also assists with family law cases, which often include allegations she deals with in her classes at SHSU, such as sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse.

?I don?t think anyone should be discriminated against,? Bailey said. ?In this day and age, we should all just get along.?

After all she has witnessed in criminal cases, Bailey said she would like to remain in employment law, perhaps one day succeeding her boss in the practice.

?I consider myself to be a pretty good people reader,? said Bailey. ?If someone told me they did it, I morally can?t defend them. If I thought that they were guilty, I couldn?t zealously defend them. I couldn?t ?get anyone off? on a technicality for a crime they committed.?

Photo of a female lawyers and a female judge with a witness in court.Bailey, who expects to graduate in December, would like to attend South Texas College of Law, Baylor University, or St. Mary School of Law in Texas, but she is also looking at schools in Oklahoma and North Carolina. She already has collected letters of recommendation from judges, attorneys, professors and even the dean of a law school.

While Bailey is obviously passionate about the law, she has trouble putting into words why she is so driven in this area. She hopes one day to become a district judge.

?It is knowing that I had a part in bringing justice,? she said quietly. ?I?m good at it and I excel at it.?

?And I like to argue,? she adds with a smile.

S. Sudan president: Will form inclusive government

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) ? South Sudan's president says he wants to form an inclusive government after firing his vice president and dismissing his entire cabinet last week.

Salva Kiir said Monday that he is consulting leaders of different political parties before announcing a new cabinet. On Saturday Kirr appointed his former government spokesman as his foreign minister, the only appointment made so far.

The recent government shake-up in Africa's newest country followed reports of a power struggle within the ruling SPLM party, especially between Kiir and former Vice President Riek Macher.

Both Macher and the dismissed leader of the ruling party, Pagan Amum, have expressed interest in running for president in South Sudan's 2015 election.

Kiir on Monday lashed out at his political opponents, saying that now "is not the time for campaigns."

Kristen Beauregard, 44, was stung about 200 times, and her boyfriend about 50 times, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Saturday. But the?horses, Chip and Trump, could not be saved.

"They were chasing us down, they were following us," Beauregard said of the incident Wednesday evening. "We swept up piles and piles of them ... it was like a bad movie."

The?bees?are being tested to see whether they are Africanized or "killer"?bees. It is unclear what prompted them to leave the hive.

Beauregard was exercising Trump, a Shetland pony, when he started to jump and kick, she said. That is when a cloud of?bees?started stinging them all over. Trying to escape, she jumped in the pool and the?horsefollowed.

Is the iPad App Store coming up blank for you? You're not alone!

Is the iPad App Store coming up blank for you? You're not alone!

The App Store icon bages displays 2 pending, but the update screen is blank for the past 2 days. Same deal on my wife's iPad.
TurboTiger, iMore forums specialist

We're been getting multiple reports from readers that the iOS App Store on the iPad is coming up blank for them for the last couple of days. The iPhone and iPod touch seem unaffected. Some reports say the entire App Store fails to load, while others say only the Updates tab fails to load. Either way, it's frustrating for those experiencing it.

In iOS 6 and earlier, the App Store is a web app in a native app wrapper, so everything inside the window, the entire interface, gets fed from an online source, so if there's a problem on the server, there's a problem with the interface.

Hopefully whatever's wrong gets fixed and soon. In the meantime, iMore forums members are tracking the problem. If you're having the problem, let me know, and if and when it starts working again, let me know as well.

US seeks transfer of 2 Gitmo detainees to Algeria

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration is planning to transfer two Guantanamo Bay detainees to Algeria, the first movement of terrorist suspects from the prison since the president announced a renewed push to close the contentious facility run by the U.S. military in Cuba.

The White House said Friday it was starting the transfers as part of President Barack Obama's goal to close the prison, a campaign promise that has eluded him since he took office. The move signaled a new push to reduce the population of 166 detainees at the prison, where dozens are on a hunger strike to draw attention to their indefinite detention.

The White House said the two detainees will not be identified until after the transfer, which can't come until after a 30-day waiting period. Administration officials also wouldn't say what security assurances they had from the Algerian government as part of the arrangement.

An administration official said the detainees were chosen because Algeria is a close U.S. ally that has successfully managed detainees in the past ? none of the previous 12 to be released have returned to terrorist activities, unlike some returned to other countries. The official, speaking on a condition of anonymity without authorization to publicly discuss the process, said it has been in the works since several months before Obama announced his intention this spring to push anew for closure.

Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel signed off on the transfer based on the recommendation of an interagency team after a months-long review. As part of the certification process that has been required by Congress for more than two years, Guantanamo detainees can be transferred if the defense secretary certifies that the individual is not at risk to engage in terrorist activities.

That's a high bar that had slowed the transfer process with 166 remaining at Guantanamo, with the last transfer in September 2012.

Seven Algerian detainees remain at Guantanamo, including five who have been cleared for transfer. Attorney Cori Crider of the British human rights group Reprieve was on a previously scheduled phone call with one of them, 34-year-old Nabil Hadjarab, when the White House announced the certification. She said they were both sort of "shocked" about the prospect of movement. Crider said she did not know whether he or her other Algerian client, 43-year-old Ahmed Bel Bacha, were among the two up for transfer.

The hunger strike, in which both her clients have taken part, and pressure from members of Congress have clearly forced the administration to take action, Crider said. "I think this month there has been more attention and more pressure on the administration in some years to make some progress and there is finally a response," she said in a phone interview from London.

As of Friday, the military said 68 prisoners met the criteria to be classified as being on hunger strike, but officials have said most of the men are eating at least occasional meals and none is in immediate danger. Of the 68, 44 have lost enough weight that the military says they meet the criteria to be force-fed if necessary.

In the past, Bel Bacha has said he does not wish to return to Algeria, where he has been convicted in absentia for belonging to a terrorist group and given a 20-year-sentence.

In 2010, six Algerian detainees resisted efforts to be repatriated, saying they'd rather stay at the prison camp than return to their home country. The most prominent case was that of Aziz Abdul Naji, who argued all the way to the Supreme Court that he might face torture in Algeria. The Supreme Court rejected his plea, and he was transferred in 2010, indicted and placed under judicial supervision.

Administration official say they carefully examine standards of treatment in receiving countries as part of the repatriation process and are confident the Algerians being transferred will be treated humanely.

Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., was quick to criticize the move because of security concerns.

"With 28 percent of former Guantanamo detainees re-engaging or suspected of re-engaging in terrorist activities, I am deeply troubled by the president's plan to release detainees to a country where there is an active al-Qaida affiliate," she said in a statement. "Rather than releasing detainees who could potentially return to the battlefield, the administration should focus on developing a coherent policy for the long-term detention of foreign terrorists ? something it has failed to do after four and a half years."

Some Democratic lawmakers, however, applauded the certification and called on the Obama administration to work to transfer out the 84 other detainees who have been cleared. "At a cost of $454 million annually ? or $2.7 million per detainee ? it is in the national security interests of the United States to transfer these detainees to their home countries rather than keep them at our isolated military base in Cuba," Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said in a statement.

Despite Obama's effort to shutter the prison, a bipartisan group of lawmakers in Congress have repeatedly resisted. The House voted 247-175 Tuesday to reject an amendment that would have allowed Obama to begin closing the facility.

At his speech in May, Obama announced several steps to move detainees out of Guantanamo, including a lifting on the ban of transfers to Yemen because of security concerns there and the appointment of senior officials at the State and Defense departments responsible for negotiating transfers.

Last month, Washington attorney Clifford Sloan was named to reopen the State Department's Office of Guantanamo Closure, but the Pentagon official has yet to be announced. William Lietzau, deputy secretary of defense for detainee affairs, who has been the top Pentagon adviser on Guantanamo, told Pentagon colleagues Thursday that he's leaving to take a position in the private sector.

  • NEW: Gov. Perry: This "undermines the will of the people of Texas"
  • The Justice Department wants to restore "preclearance" provisions
  • Attorney General Holder: We'll "use every tool at our disposal to stand against discrimination"
  • The Supreme Court tossed out the old rule; Holder will try another tactic

Philadelphia (CNN) -- The U.S. Justice Department will seek a federal court order forcing Texas to resume "preclearing" any changes to its voting laws, the first enforcement action by the Obama administration since the Supreme Court tossed out a key provision of the landmark Voting Rights Act.

Attorney General Holder made the announcement Thursday in a speech before the Urban League.

"My colleagues and I are determined to use every tool at our disposal to stand against discrimination wherever it is found," Holder said in Philadelphia. "Even as Congress considers updates to the Voting Rights Act in light of the court's ruling, we plan, in the meantime, to fully utilize the law's remaining sections to ensure that the voting rights of all American citizens are protected."

A divided 5-4 Supreme Court last month invalidated the formula used to determine which states or local jurisdictions -- mostly in the South -- could remain under special federal oversight, requiring them to get approval from Washington before making any changes in voting procedures.

Conservatives fume when Holder talks race and law

That blunts much of the federal government's enforcement power in states and localities with a history of discrimination at the polls.

The ruling does not change the fact it remains illegal to discriminate against a person when it comes to voting. But it does change how some governments have been singled out.

Holder said the Obama administration will use a different section of the Voting Rights Act that allows federal authorities to ask a judge to order a state to be put under the preclearance regime. To do so the Justice Department must prove "purposeful" discrimination.

Texas will be test case of the tactic.

The state is the subject of two ongoing court fights over its voter identification law and the voting boundaries created by the legislature.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott had indicated after the high court ruling that both the state voter identification law and its redistricting maps would go into effect immediately.

Republican Gov. Rick Perry criticized Holder's remarks and defended the Texas "voter integrity" laws.

"Once again, the Obama administration is demonstrating utter contempt for our country's system of checks and balances, not to mention the U.S. Constitution," Perry said in a prepared statement. "This end-run around the Supreme Court undermines the will of the people of Texas, and casts unfair aspersions on our state's common-sense efforts to preserve the integrity of our elections process."

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, was also defiant. "Texans should not -- and will not -- stand for the continued bullying of our state by the Obama administration," he said in a news release Thursday.

Lawmakers in Congress have begun considering proposals to update the Voting Rights Act to ensure continued federal oversight. Holder said that while his department could act unilaterally, updating current laws is the real key.

"It is the duty of today's Justice Department to continue monitoring jurisdictions around the country for changes that may hamper these voting rights -- to keep taking appropriately aggressive action against any jurisdiction that attempts to hinder free and fair access to the franchise," he said. "And to keep refining and refocusing current enforcement efforts while we work with Congress to craft stronger tools for protecting voting rights."

Holder called the high court ruling "deeply disappointing and flawed."

Under the section of the Voting Rights Act invalidated by the high court, any changes in voting laws and procedures in all or parts of 15 covered states -- including Texas -- were subject to federal oversight. That meant the Justice Department or a federal court had to sign off on all aspects, including something as simple as moving a polling place temporarily across the street.

The provision was reauthorized by Congress in 2006 for another 25 years. Officials in Shelby County, Alabama, subsequently filed suit, saying the monitoring was overly burdensome and unwarranted.

Chief Justice John Roberts, in his majority opinion, for the Supreme Court, said the decades-old formula still being used had "no logical relation to the present day."

"While any racial discrimination in voting is too much, Congress must ensure that the legislation it passes to remedy the problem speaks to the current conditions," he said.

President Obama had characterized the ruling as a "setback," even as he vowed his "administration will continue to do everything in its power to ensure a fair and equal voting process."

Texas will not be the first state the Justice Department has sought to "bail in" under a different enforcement regime from the Voting Rights Act, which would still be allowed in the wake of the high court decision. Parts of New Mexico and Arkansas also were subject to that special federal oversight, but the provision requires the Justice Department to establish a new, comprehensive record of alleged "intentional" discrimination.

That means the burden of proof would initially be on Washington to show a state like Texas deserves continued special scrutiny. If that oversight is granted, the burden of proof would then shift to the state, when justifying any future changes in its voting laws.

App Store wants: More and better adult beverage apps!

App Store wants: More and better booze apps!

Over the weekend I was out at a local brewery that has an awesome selection of craft beers so, naturally, I decided to work on a roundup of the best iPhone apps for beer drinkers. I worried there wouldn't be enough to choose from, however, so I quickly broadened my plans to beer and wine. But when I started working on it, I quickly discovered that even including both wine and beer, the selection of adult beverage apps was dismal. A couple social apps, a couple journalling apps, a couple location apps, but not a great selection of great apps.

That's not to say there weren't a few very good ones, but certainly not enough to do a proper "best apps for" post. In all my time writing app roundups for iMore, I've never had this happen before.

For beer drinkers, the only decent app I could find was Untappd which allows you to discover beers by checking out local pubs and viewing what others have to say about their beers. Even for living in a small area outside of Chicago, I still found some people using the app and rating craft beers. Outside of Untappd, I wasn't able to find any apps for beer drinkers that were worth using.

When it comes to wine, things weren't much better. I spent quite a bit of time signing into different wine related apps but there was absolutely no community behind them, which left them with no appreciable value. The only relatively useful app I was able to find was Drync, which is available for free. It allows you to view different wine selections and browse. The killer feature is the ability to save wines you like by scanning labels. You can even buy wine through Drync with little effort and have it shipped straight to your home. If you purchase 6 bottles or more, the shipping is free.

Sure, you can use non-specific apps, like Evernote to capture labels of bottles you like, tip calculators to figure out how much to leave bartenders and waiters, and general social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to share your experiences, but that can be said of almost any app category.

I did find quite a few apps dedicated to mixed drinks, like bartenders guides and mixology guides. I might still do a generic adult beverages round-up. But for casual drinks like beer and wine...?

In the Chicago and surrounding areas there have been several breweries and wineries popping up that have wonderful menus. From recent travels, I've also found several other areas really pushing local craft beers and wines. Anyone who looks for these places, places that feature local products, is in for a challenge.

Either I'm completely missing something or this is one of those categories on the App Store that's still underserved. Perhaps the market isn't big enough. Perhaps that's why some old apps have been left to fall out of date, or maybe no one has made the right app yet? Perhaps there's an opportunity here?

Let me know if there's a great beer or wine app you've found, or if you've looked into making one, let me know what you think of the market?

A23 London Road Wharfedale Gardens - Accidents

Welcome to the all new RAC Route Planner, which has been redesigned to make it easier for you to plan your routes, get traffic updates and calculate mileage and journey costs. To improve how you find out about traffic issues along your route we have developed a separate section for Traffic News, which gives you the ability to find traffic issues by location as well as our unique ability to plot issues along your route. We've also added a separate section for our Mileage Calculator tool, which can help you work out what your journey costs will be, what you can claim back in business mileage and information about your CO2 emissions.

The route finder service provides road maps and driving directions for the UK, Europe and beyond, as well as giving you the opportunity to find hotels wherever you're going in the UK. You can also generate directions that are fully integrated with customisable real-time traffic updates and our fuel cost calculator using the advanced options in the main Route Planner section. The functionality provides specific city driving maps for London and European route directions for longer trips abroad.

Our new route finder services are intended to improve our street map capabilities. We'll continue to work on improving our Route Planner, so if you have any feedback or notice any issues, please let us know through our contact us service. Our initial re-launch is just the first step in our development. We'll soon be adding RAC member features that we'll be making available to everyone for a limited time, including adding weather information to the maps and being able to set up email traffic alerts for your regular routes.

Microsoft exec says Xbox One preorders have been ?through the roof?

Xbox One PreordersXbox One Preorders

Microsoft ruffled a lot of features earlier this year when it unveiled the next-generation Xbox One and revealed several controversial new policies. It has since backtracked on all of the major pain points, however, and Xbox One sales are now projected by some to crush sales of Sony?s rival console, the PlayStation 4. While no one outside of Microsoft and its retail partners know any hard numbers for the time being, early signs have clearly been positive?and now?Microsoft?s Chief of Staff for Devices and Studios Group Aaron Greenberg stated on Twitter that Xbox One preorders from GameStop have been ?through the roof.? Demand was so heavy according to Greenberg that GameStop had to stop taking preorders some time ago, though he suggested that preorder availability might return at some point in the future.

Ultra-Orthodox again elected as Israel's two chief rabbis

JERUSALEM ? There was no white smoke and little pomp, but a collection of religious and political leaders emerged Wednesday from a much-anticipated private meeting in a Jerusalem hotel to announce the election of Israel's next two chief rabbis, who will take their place among the nation's most influential religious figures.

It was a bruising, sometimes ugly campaign in which many of the candidates were tainted by allegations of corruption, nepotism or racism, underscoring why the government-funded rabbinate has fallen so low in public opinion in recent years.

When the dust settled, a collection of 150 legislators, religious court judges, mayors and municipal rabbis once again selected two candidates representing the ultra-Orthodox community, which has dominated the institution for 20 years.

David Lau, 47, the longtime rabbi from Modiin, will serve as chief rabbi for Israel's Ashkenazi community, and Yizthak Yosef, 61, son of prominent Israeli rabbi Ovadia Yosef, will represent Sephardic Jews. Ashkenazi Jews originated in Europe and Sephardic Jews come from the Middle East and North Africa.

The 10-year term puts each man at the helm of a vast system of state-run religious institutions, responsible for thousands of appointments and jobs.

It also gives them considerable legal authority over Jewish citizens in matters of marriage, divorce, women's rights, conversion, certification of kosher food and restaurants and deciding who is considered a Jew in Israel.

The ultra-Orthodox faced a stiff challenge this year from a faction of modern Orthodox Zionists, who launched a vigorous campaign to install its own leaders in the posts.

Many viewed the election as proxy battle between Shas party head Aryeh Deri, representing the ultra-Orthodox, and Jewish Home party leader Naftali Bennett, on behalf of those who want to modernize the rabbinate. Each man lobbied hard for his preferred candidates.

"For two decades, the main battle was between Ashkenazi and Sephardic ultra-Orthodox," said Yair Sheleg, research fellow at the Israel Democracy Institute. "Now that Zionist orthodoxy has made a political comeback [with Jewish Home's success in the last election], the historic dispute between the two main streams, Zionist Orthodoxy and ultra-Orthodoxy, has been revived."

It was a rematch of sorts: In national elections this year, Jewish Home help shut out Shas from the new coalition government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, leaving the ultra-Orthodox out of the Cabinet for the first time in nearly a decade.

This time, however, Shas emerged the victor. The election of the two ultra-Orthodox candidates suggests there will be few changes in the rabbinate's practices or interpretations of Judaism.

Unsuccessful candidate Rabbi David Stav, who was strongly backed by the modern Orthodox community for the Ashkenazi position, rattled the ultra-Orthodox by promising to reform the rabbinate into a more "user-friendly" institution.

The campaign was marked by one scandal after another. Outgoing Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger was put under house arrest on suspicion of bribery. Former candidate Rabbi Avraham Yosef dropped out of the race after being questioned by the police on suspicion of fraud.

The attorney general sought to disqualify the candidacy of Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, whose past statements urging Jews to avoid renting to Arabs were deemed racist and inappropriate.

Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the spiritual leader of Shas, publicly questioned the Jewishness of some of the modern Orthodox candidates. His critics, in turn, accused him of using his position to favor the candidacy of his son.

But that wasn't unusual. Most of the candidates were sons of former chief rabbis or Knesset members.

Noting the heavy undercurrent of partisan politics and religious rivalry in the race, several commentators joked that it was a good thing the process occurs only once a decade.

Some are calling for an overhaul of the state rabbinate and question whether it still serves a valuable purpose. Most Orthodox Israelis turn to their community rabbis for guidance, rather than government institutions. And many seculars resent the legal authority vested in the rabbinate in matters of marriage and divorce.

"It is time to throw out the whole rabbinate," Anat Hoffman, director of the liberal advocacy group Israel Religious Action Center, said in an email to supporters. "This symbolic position represents more than its own corruption. It is a constant reminder that Jews in Israel lack the religious choices that Jews abroad enjoy."

Others argue it still has a role in preserving the Jewish character of Israel.

"The chief rabbinate is an atrophied body, corrupt to a large degree too," said Yedidia Stern, professor at Bar-Ilan University Law School. "But personally speaking, as an Israeli citizen and a religious Jew, I hope it is possible to rehabilitate the rabbinate. ... It can be part of our promise that Israel will be both Jewish and democratic without compromising either. Headed by the right person, it is an institution worth fighting for."

FLAT IS WHERE IT'S AT?Illinois Chamber of Commerce President Doug Whitley puts up a strong defense of Illinois' flat-rate income tax system: "Illinois' current flat rate income tax is inherently fairer than a graduated income tax since everyone pays the same rate and tax increases uniformly impact everyone. A flat rate tax does not promote divisive class warfare rhetoric or purposefully attempt to re-distribute income according to a subjective fairness standard.? A flat rate tax requires all taxpayers to vigilantly stand guard against excessive government spending." He's adamantly opposed to switching to a progressive tax system, as supported by many members of the General Assembly. This is a stealth tax increase that will give the very people who have mismanaged Illinois into financial disaster even more money to blow, he writes. Agree or disagree,?Whitley's op-ed?is a worthy read on what likely will be Topic No. 1 in the 2014 gubernatorial race.

Ralph Martire of the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability and Ted Dabrowski of the Illinois Policy Institute will discuss the pros and cons, respectively, of a progressive tax system. This promises to be a spirited debate on a topic you'll be hearing a lot about between now and November 2014. Find out morehere.

BAD NUMBERS FOR CHICAGO SCHOOLS?50 schools closed, 3,000 employees laid off, 52.5 percent of elementary students meet state achievement standards, $1 billion deficit. Horrible numbers for Chicago Public Schools. And bad news for all of Illinois if it keeps up. When a school system fails, the middle class flees. When the middle class flees, the city crumbles. (See Scott Stantis cartoon above.) Madeleine Doubek?explains.

FAMILY AFFAIR?Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has named State Rep. Deb Mell to replace her father, Ald. Richard Mell, on the Chicago City Council. In Illinois, passing along political positions as family heirlooms has become standard procedure. We don't live in a monarchy and our government shouldn't operate like one. More explanationhere.

THE BRAC APPROACH?When the federal government closes a military base, it doesn't simply allow the old facilities to become sources of blight. The BRAC Commission has gone to great lengths to make former military facilities assets to their communities. Chicago Public Schools should take the same approach with the 49 vacant school buildings it has created, writes Reboot contributor Peter A. Creticos of the Institute for Work and the Economy. The neighborhoods in which the closed schools are located need all the help they can get. Creticos makes a?good case for innovation.

Heading for regeneration: Researchers reactivate head regeneration in regeneration-deficient species of planarians

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Rabbits can't do it, neither can frogs, but zebrafish and axolotls can and flatworms are true masters of the craft: regeneration. Why some animals can re-grow lost body parts or organs while others cannot remains a big mystery. And even more intriguing to us regeneration-challenged humans is the question whether one might be able to activate regenerative abilities in species that don't usually regenerate.

Former Bayern Munich coach Felix Magath has predicted another march to the title

Former Bayern Munich coach Felix Magath has predicted a season "low on excitement" with the Bundesliga champions expected to march unchallenged to a second straight title.

Bayern swept the board last season, winning a Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League treble - and their form in the pre-season Telekom Cup tournament at the weekend means it is hard to see beyond them for silverware in 2014.

In new coach Pep Guardiola's two first serious friendly games in charge, Bayern dismantled Hamburg 4-0 and Borussia Monchengladbach 5-1 - with both games being played over just an hour.

Not only those results indicate another season of superlatives for the record German champions.

"Certainly not too much should be read into friendly results, but anybody looking at the condition Bayern are in has got to expect a season which will be low on excitement in terms of the title," he said on his Facebook page.

"Bayern have pulled even further away from the competition and you can hardly talk of any serious rival."

Bayern clinched the Bundesliga in record time last season, ending the campaign with a 25-point cushion over second-placed Borussia Dortmund.

They have strengthened this summer with the arrivals of Mario Gotze from Dortmund and Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona and will fancy their chances of becoming the first to defend their Champions League title successfully.

Since launch, we've had a number of top indie artists contribute, including Shannon Wheeler, Box Brown, Dustin Harbin, Sean Pryor, Sam Henderson and Ed Piskor. In the off-chance that you haven't read every issue -- or you just never quite made it to the end of each -- we've pulled together ten of our favorites cartoons in Distro history. Check those out below, and be sure to pick up the 100th issue later this week for a special take on the future of consumer electronics.
