Now you can run with the bulls in the U.S.A.

Man steps in front of charging bulls at The Great Bull Run in Petersburg, Virginia on Aug. 24, 2013. (Photo: Chris??

PETERSBURG, Va. ? It was nearing the end of a long day full of booze, food fights and group runs alongside angry 1,000-pound bovines, and no one had been sent to the hospital. Yet.

?We came all this way and not a single broken neck,? one reporter lamented.

We had come here to cover The Great Bull Run, the first attempt at an American version of the traditional Spanish "running of the bulls" made famous by Ernest Hemingway in which thousands of thrill seekers flee from massive charging animals with sharp horns.

Held on a drag racing strip at the Virginia Motorsports Park on Saturday, the American bull run came complete with a massive tomato fight?just like the annual festival in Pamplona. The event was the brainchild of Rob Dickens and Brad Scudder, two extreme sports organizers who wanted to host a Yankee-style bull run after they saw the whopping price tag of traveling to Spain, where residents have hosted a similar event for more than 100 years. Saturday's event was similar to the Spanish festival, but our bull runs have rodeo clowns and more Budweiser.

Scudder and Dickens figured that they could find enough idiots to shell out 80 bucks to risk getting gored in the stomach in the comfort of their own country for the thrill of running from a storming herd of bulls.

They were right. And I was one of those idiots.

Before I left for the run, I did my homework. (And no, that does not mean I trained by running regularly or exercising. Please.) Instead, I asked my friend Andy Harris, a serial marathon runner and super athlete who has actually run with the real bulls in Pamplona, for tips on how to increase my chances of survival.

First, it helps to be a serial marathon runner and super athlete who has actually run with the real bulls in Pamplona. Since I am none of those things, I paid close attention to his other advice.

Rule Number 1:

?Know the course and your possible exit points and stay to the perimeter for the most part because the bulls tend to go in a straight line down the middle. Be careful around corners because the bulls can't corner at all and usually fall.?

Thankfully, this event would be held on a straight quarter mile drag strip, so I was good to go.

Rule Number 2:

?Always keep a fellow runner or two nearby to position between yourself and a bull because if all else fails, human shields are a nice last resort.?

OK, but what if I?m the one between some other guy and the bull? This does not sound comforting.

Rule Number 3:

?They tell you over and over not to show up inebriated or wearing anything but good running shoes. For some reason, drunk people don't fare as well.?

I ignored this sound piece of wisdom and took a shot of tequila before my race. (Spoiler alert: I survived.)

An announcer went over the ground rules on a loudspeaker as I lined up alongside the hundreds of other participants preparing to run.

?There?s no shame in being sane,? the announcer said to a group people who signed up to be willingly stampeded by bulls. He advised us to stay on the sides of the narrow, quarter-mile track, which had been covered with 300 truckloads of sand for the event. He too warned us against imbibing beforehand and forbade the use of cell phones and hand-held cameras on the track.

Both of these rules were widely flouted.

Most of the runners with me were young men and women who apparently had not heard that human beings are weak, fragile things that break easily. There was a sprinkling of aged Baby Boomers who never had the chance to scratch Pamplona off their bucket list.

While many in the crowd donned the traditional white clothes worn by the runners in Spain, some showed up wearing just speedos and running shoes. Others dressed as super heroes. One guy wrapped a sling around his torso that carried a life-sized baby doll, which he used as an adorable shield.

As we piled onto the track, I looked up and saw a remote-controlled camera helicopter hovering in the air, a uniquely American contribution to the tradition. The drone crashed into the bleachers and hit a spectator in the face. A fine omen!

?If I die,? a man wearing a full-body hot pink jumpsuit said to his friends, ?this is how I want to go.? (Seriously?)

After a countdown, a group of cowboys released the bulls at the far end of the track. We were ready, but had no idea what to expect.

As the giants rushed toward us, I felt the sand shift beneath my feet. I heard the pounding of their hooves. Hundreds of people in front of me began to scream, but I still couldn't see any bulls.

Like a good horror movie, what you can?t see is almost always the scariest part.

Before I spotted the animals, runners began to turn and speed toward me, their eyes blazing with fear and adrenaline. Behind them, rising from the crowd, I saw the horns of the first bull barreling straight toward us. As they charged through the middle of the track, runners sprang for the side rails.

The bulls came in groups of threes and fours, charging at speeds of up to 35 miles-per-hour. It is called running ?with? the bulls, not running ?from? the bulls for a reason. They will always outpace you. Embrace it, and run for your life.

While the bulls charged past, a man stumbled over his feet and nearly pushed a woman toward the center. A bull?s horns missed her by just a few feet.

As the second wave charged toward us, a bare-chested frat boy jumped into the middle of the track in front of two sprinting bulls, planted his feet and flexed his arms. They lowered their heads and aimed toward his torso. He fled out of the way just as they ran past him. He was not gored, alas.

The final bulls in the line swept passed me and I breathed a sigh of relief.

At the end of the path, two cowboys on horseback from the ranch that brought the bulls from their ranch in Kentucky smirked at the wailing city slickers who were rushing past them.

?These people are crazy,? muttered Preston Fowlkes.

When a guy who works with bulls for a living says you?re crazy, well, you?re probably crazy.

This act of insanity was repeated every half hour, broken up only by a Pamplona-style tomato fight in the parking lot in the afternoon in which I received a black eye from a large, red overripe flying projectile.

Once we finely bruised and drenched in our own homemade ketchup, it was time to head back to the bulls.

On the final race of the day, the event organizers decided to up the ante. Instead of releasing just 12 bulls into the crowed, they let all 24 run at once. Instead of 500 runners, they squeezed 700 people together onto the track.

Just like every other run earlier that day, the bulls were released on the crowd. Standing with their muscles clenched, the late-day runners hooped and hollered as the bulls galloped toward them, which by now? were tired and, more likely, grumpy.

Two men in the center of the running track tripped on the dirt just as a massive black bull stomped behind them. Both men buried their heads in the sand and the bull leapt over them. One man rolled away toward the side. The other man, perhaps not aware that there were bulls still behind him, sat up and knelt onto the raceway.

His eyes looked up just when a second bull came barreling down behind him. The bull?s front hooves crushed the back of his neck and he tumbled violently beneath the body of the animal. The bull ran off and left him unconscious in the dirt at the center of the raceway, where more bulls were approaching. Another runner grabbed him by the foot and pulled him to the safety of the gates. A bull collides with a man who tripped on the track at the Great Bull Run. (Photo: Cristina Caraballo)

Shouts for a doctor were drowned out by the noise of the crowd rushing past. Others who saw him lying there screamed ?Medic! Medic! Medic!? and an emergency team scrambled over the gate with a stretcher and loaded him onto an ambulance.

The man would survive, but he was treated for a concussion and other injuries at a nearby hospital.

Event organizers said that despite the one incident, they considered the Great Bull Run a success. After all, until then, the worst injury of the day had been over-ripe tomatoes to the face.

?It?s not fun for him; it?s not fun for me,? Dickens told me after the final run. ?But it?s part of the event and I expect it to happen every now and then.?

At least it won't happen to me: I've been informed by my loved ones that I will be disowned if I ever try this again.

China's Bo drops love triangle charge at trial end

By GILLIAN WONG
Associated Press

JINAN, China (AP) - China's most sensational trial in decades ended Monday with disgraced politician Bo Xilai hinting at a love triangle involving his wife and former right hand man - both key witnesses against him - as he made last-ditch efforts to redeem his reputation.

The prosecution countered by saying Bo should be severely punished because he showed no remorse in the five-day corruption trial in the eastern city of Jinan, aimed at capping a scandal set off by his wife's murder of a British businessman and resulting in Bo's purge from top posts and the Communist Party.

In testimony, Bo denounced both his wife, Gu Kailai, as crazy and his former police chief, Wang Lijun, as dishonest, as he has sought to portray himself as an official who worked too hard to scrutinize his family's affairs and who was surrounded by conniving, duplicitous people.

"He (Wang) was secretly in love with Gu Kailai, his emotions were tangled and he could not extricate himself," Bo told the court.

Prosecutors said Monday that the trial proceedings have shown adequate proof of Bo's guilt on charges of netting $4.3 million through bribes and embezzlement and abuse of power in interfering with the murder investigation. A date for the verdict has not been given. Bo faces a possible life sentence.

"The defendant's crimes are extremely grave, and he also refuses to admit guilt. As such, the circumstances do not call for a lenient punishment but a severe one, in accordance with the law," the prosecutor said, according to a transcript of the court proceedings.

Though Bo's downfall has widely been perceived as the result of his defeat in party infighting ahead of last fall's once-a-decade leadership transition, officials have taken unusual steps to portray his trial as a legitimate prosecution of his misdeeds, including the release of detailed, though presumably vetted, transcripts of the proceedings.

Bo mounted an unexpectedly vigorous defense against the criminal charges, recanting earlier confessions and rarely expressing contrition as he sought to lay the blame for most of the misdeeds on his wife and others. However, he refrained from using the trial as a stage to denounce the administration and his political opponents, according to the transcripts.

Most importantly, he acknowledged the party's legitimacy while holding firm to his denial of the charges - a move that at once seeks to retain his honor and appeal to party loyalists.

"I know I am not a perfect person and I had a bad temper and acted subjectively and I made serious faults and mistakes," Bo said. "I deeply feel that I failed to govern my family and it had a negative effect on the state. I sincerely accept the investigation from the party and the judicial departments, but the charge of corruption is not true."

Bo added a folksy touch to his arguments, hitting on themes of filial piety, simplicity and tradition that appeal to his support base, made up mostly of farmers and workers at the lowest rung of society who have been disillusioned by the perceived immorality of party cadres. He said the jacket he was wearing was made by a local township company in Dalian, and the pants were bought by his mother in the 1960s.

In his efforts to distance himself from Gu, he admitted an affair and said the couple had been estranged at one point.

Bo was accused, among other things, of providing political favors to a businessman, Xu Ming, in return for having him at his family's beck and call. According to Bo's wife, Xu gave the family expensive gifts that included a villa in France, international airfare to three continents, abalone dinners and a Segway scooter - and Gu said Bo knew about the gifts because she told him.

Bo is also accused of funneling $800,000 in government funds from a secret project.

The court also heard allegations over the weekend that Bo abused his power as the Communist Party secretary of Chongqing to block an investigation into the Briton's murder, as well as to hide his aide's embarrassing flight to a U.S. consulate - an event that help set the scandal into motion.

On Monday, Bo repeated his doubts about the evidence presented by prosecutors while introducing a bizarre twist to the narrative. Bo said that Wang tried to defect to the consulate early last year, not in a dispute over the investigation into the Briton's murder - as was commonly understood - but because he had confessed his feelings to Gu and feared Bo's rage over that trespass.

"He knew my personality, he'd trespassed on my family and violated my basic emotions, this is the real reason he decided to defect. Wang Lijun in reality is trying to muddy the waters," Bo testified.

He also said that Gu and Wang were as close as "glue and lacquer" and that they had a "very special relationship; I was frustrated by that."

Wang had earlier said in court he went to the Americans because he feared for his safety after he told Bo that the politician's wife had murdered the Briton.

Striking a note of resignation, Bo thanked the court for letting him fully defend himself. "I know there is no escape from my fate and sometimes I was weak at heart. Faced by imprisonment, I have mixed feelings and the only thing I have is the rest of my life."

Crisis in Egypt: US seeks to preserve influence. Is there any left?

The administration's cautious approach to Egypt, far from preserving its influence, may have signaled to the military rulers that the US needs Egypt more than the reverse, analysts say.

By Howard LaFranchi,?Staff writer / August 20, 2013

White House principal deputy press secretary Josh Earnest answers questions at the White House in Washington, Aug. 19. Earnest said, 'Our aid and assistance relationship with Egypt is under a review, but it has not been cut off.' President Obama ordered a review of military aid to Egypt in early July, but that review 'has not concluded,' Earnest said.

The Obama administration?s cautious approach to Egypt and the behind-the-scenes, program-by-program review it is undertaking of US military aid to Egypt suggests it is seeking a way to preserve influence with the country?s new military rulers.

But that influence has dwindled to mattering very little as the military pursues its domestic political goals full steam ahead, regional analysts say. If anything, some of them add, the administration?s careful efforts to preserve a decades-old regional security strategy based on Egypt may only be encouraging Egypt?s generals to proceed knowing that the US needs Egypt more than Egypt needs the US.

?The administration?s cautious, step-by-step approach only reinforces the thinking in the minds of the generals? that they can proceed on the ?very dangerous? repressive path they?ve chosen under the assumption that America values a stable Egypt too much to cut it loose, says Brian Katulis, a senior analyst of US national security interests in the Middle East at Washington?s Center for American Progress.

President Obama?s unwillingness to publicly and definitely cut off $1.6 billion in mostly military assistance to Egypt reminds Mr. Katulis of a scene from the movie Brokeback Mountain, ?where one cowboy tells the other, ?I don?t know how to quit you,? ? he says.

?Obama is saying by his actions that the US does not know how to quit Egypt ? and the generals see that,? Katulis says.

The administration?s hesitant approach and its fuzzy answers to questions on current US policy toward Egypt appear to have fostered confusion Tuesday over whether or not the US has in fact halted military assistance.

An aide to Sen. Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat who has called for a suspension of military assistance, was quoted Tuesday as saying the administration had informed Senator Leahy?s foreign operations subcommittee that ?transfer of military aid was stopped.?

The aide, David Carle, went on to say that the suspension was ?not necessarily official policy,? according to the Associated Press, and that ?there is no indication how long it will last.?

Administration officials poured cold water on any claims of a halt in aid, however, with Pentagon spokesman George Little saying categorically, ?There has been no decision to halt or to suspend assistance to Egypt.?

At the State Department, deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf said Tuesday ?We have not made a policy decision to halt our aid to Egypt, period.? At the same time, Mr. Obama planned to hold a cabinet-level meeting Tuesday afternoon at which the question of aid to Egypt would be addressed, officials said.?? ????????

The administration is now reviewing the delivery ? programmed for this month ? of 10 Apache attack helicopters, and a subsequent delivery of ?kits? for the assembly of armored tanks. The State Department has informed congressional committees that these and other programmed military hardware packages are ?under review.?

Rangers' 11-run 3rd vs. Astros biggest in majors

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? The Texas Rangers have put together the highest-scoring inning in the major leagues this season.

They scored 11 runs in the third against Houston on Monday night, their biggest inning since scoring 11 runs in the fifth inning against Tampa Bay on Sept. 26, 2009.

The last major league team to score as many runs in an inning was St. Louis on July 21, 2012, when the Cardinals scored 12 runs in the seventh of a 12-0 win over the Chicago Cubs.

All nine Texas players scored in the inning, with Leonys Martin and Elvis Andrus each scoring twice. The Rangers had seven hits, six singles and a double, along with three walks, two errors and a sac bunt.

Texas led 13-1 after three innings.

Stocks log 4-day losing streak as market awaits Fed signals

stocks

Stocks started the week with a thud Monday, with the Dow and S&P 500 logging their first four-day losing streaks this year, as investors looked ahead for clues on the Federal Reserve's plans on bond purchases and amid rising Treasury yields.

"All of last week, people were trying to make the story match the market move," said Art Hogan, managing director at Lazard Capital. "If the pullback last week was due to tapering worries, then I think we may have overdone it. I was more concerned about the actual negative news?weak guidance from Cisco and earnings misses from Macy's, Wal-Mart and Kohl's."

The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 70 points to close just above the psychologically-important 15,000 level, dragged by JPMorgan and Alcoa. Last week, the index suffered its worst weekly decline of 2013, shedding 2.2 percent.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also finished in the red. The Dow and S&P 500 are on track for their biggest monthly declines since May 2012.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, jumped above 15.

Most key S&P sectors fell into negative territory, led by energy and financials.

"The movement in the market is a bit exaggerated when volume is light and that's going to be the case over the next couple of weeks," said Hogan. "We don't have much this week but we do have a real concentration of information on Wednesday and Thursday including the Fed's meeting minutes?until we get some news in terms of what tapering is going to look like, we may be sideways this week."

With no major economic data on tap Monday, trading was light as investors looked ahead to the minutes of the last Fed meeting, which will be released on Wednesday, for clues as to when the central bank will start scaling back its $85 billion per month stimulus program.

(Read more:September or December taper ? does it really matter?)

In Asia, China's benchmark index, the Shanghai Composite, climbed 0.8 percent as sentiment recovered, following last week's trading error at Everbright Securities. Plus, the Japanese Nikkei reversed earlier losses after posting a wider-than-expected monthly trade deficit, which cast some doubt on Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's aggressive economic policies.

(Read more:That 6% rally in China? Blame a trading goof)

On the earnings front, Saks posted a winder-than-expected quarterly loss after weak sales of shoes and handbags caused the department store chain to mark down prices. Saks became the latest retailer to post lackluster sales. Last week, Macy's, Nordstrom, Kohl's and Wal-Martall posted lower-than-expected sales. In July, Saks reached a deal to be acquired by Canada's Hudson's Bay.

JPMorgan Chase declined following weekend reports that U.S. authorities have opened a bribery investigation into whether the bank hired the children of Chinese officials to help it win lucrative business.

In the bond markets, yields on 10-year benchmark Treasurys briefly touched 2.90 percent, the highest since July 2011 amid Fed tapering concerns. So far this month, U.S. bond mutual funds and ETFs have seen outflows of $19.7 billion, according to TrimTabs.

"Heavy bond fund redemptions and the backup in bond yields should concern all investors, not just bond investors, because the U.S. economy is a highly leveraged economy that will not easily tolerate higher borrowing costs," TrimTabs CEO David Santschi said in a report.

Brent crude oil rose above $110 a barrel as the loss of Libyan oil exports tightened supply and as ongoing violent unrest in Egypt stoked fears for exports from other oil producers in the Middle East and North Africa.

Oil prices are likely to drift higher this week, CNBC's weekly sentiment survey showed. However, price gains may be limited, as analysts said the uptick in political instability in Egypt had already been priced in.

"There is still too much oil," said Thomas McMahon, director of the Pan Asia Clearing Enterprise and former chief executive officer of the Singapore Mercantile Exchange. "But cheap dollars, technical disconnect and Egypt seems to be sweeping this aside. Common sense and supply demand will prevail but maybe not this week."

Sony diz que 80% do p?blico prefere PS4 a Xbox One

Imagem Postada

Pacino movie films in middle of concert by Chicago

(AP) ? An Al Pacino movie broke out in the middle of a concert by the band Chicago, with thousands of fans serving as extras.

Cameras were wheeled onstage during intermission of the group's show at the Greek Theatre on Friday night to film a scene from Pacino's upcoming movie "Imagine," in which he plays aging rock star Danny Collins.

With coaching from the director, the crowd chanted the name of Pacino's character as the 73-year-old actor walked on stage to sing "Hey Baby Doll" in a black suit. The movie co-stars Michael Caine, Annette Bening and Jennifer Garner.

"This is an improvisation," Pacino told the crowd. "You just came in and got it. That's not easy."

Chicago's band members remained on stage to watch and clap along during the 25-minute filming. After a few takes, the crowd grew restless and there was scattered booing for the real musicians to resume playing.

Earlier in Chicago's set, Joe Mantegna of CBS' "Criminal Minds" joined his hometown band to sing "If You Leave Me Now."

Pacino returned to the stage during Chicago's encore and sang and danced to their hit "25 or 6 to 4."

"For a shy guy from the South Bronx, this has been great," Pacino said.

The robot is meant to be a communication connection between humans and machine (inquirer)

While sending humans to space has been going on since Neil Armstrong took his first step on the moon, Japan has made a new step by sending out the world?s first humanoid, talking robot.

READ MORE: MacGyver Bot In Production From Georgia

Named Kirobo, a play on the Japanese words for ?Hope? and ?Robot,? the robot took to space in a rocket ship on Sunday from the International Space Station from Tanegashima, southwestern Japan, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA.

From Associated Press:?

?The childlike robot was designed to be a companion for astronaut Koichi Wakata, and will communicate with another robot on Earth, according to developers. Wakata is expected to arrive at the space station in November.

Robot designer Tomotaka Takahashi, of the University of Tokyo, advertiser Dentsu and automaker Toyota Motor Corp. worked on the robot.

The challenge was making sure it could move and talk where there was no gravity.?

The robot is only 13 inches tall (34 centimeters to be precise) and has a childlike image. When talking to reporters, it stated ?one small step for me, a giant leap for robots."

The robot, while serving as a companion for the human astronaut, Wakata, will also be communicating with an earth-stationed robot at the command center.?

The designer, Takahashi, said "I wish for this robot to function as a mediator between person and machine, or person and Internet and sometimes even between people.?

The rocket was reported to have launched successfully without any damage to the cargo or passengers.

  • Cool On The Go - Versatile Hands-Free Personal Cooling Device

In case the previous fan necklace wasn't large enough, here is another option. This one is a larger, bulkier and stranger shape, but far more versatile. You can wear it as a necklace and strap it to things like your baby's car seat. It comes in both white <em>and </em>blue! Awesome.

  • Personal Cooling System 3.0

If you're more of the minimalist type, Amazon also sells a very small, discrete and cool looking choker that cools you down.

If you're one of those people prone to overheating wrists, this is a fun way to keep your wrists cool.

  • Solar Powered Fan Hat

Another cool fan you don't have to hold: the solar powered fan hat! Walk around, look awesome, and get fanned on your forehead without having to move at all.

  • The Evaporative Cooling Cap

If you don't like the fan hat, you could also fill a hat with water which will freeze and weigh as much as a brick on your head all day.

  • Ice Bandana

Or, if you're not too into hats, just wear a bandana with ice in it. You'll look normal. And when it starts to melt, it'll be really awesome.

  • Visor Head Cover

And if you want a more fashionable head cover...

  • Flexi Freeze Ice Vest

Not only does it look like a bullet proof vest, but for everyone who has wondered what it would be like to wear ice trays as clothing, now is your chance to find out. It's going to be really cool (hehe, literally!) to see what happens when it melts. Who doesn't love carrying twenty pounds of water around on their body?

  • Fan Umbrella

Because if holding a fan, wearing one on your neck and/or in your hat isn't enough, you can also hold a massive umbrella which will fan you from a foot above your head.

Democratic governors nervous about health plan

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Democratic governors say they are nervous about getting the new federal health care law implemented but add they will be better positioned in next year's elections than many of their Republican counterparts who have resisted the far-reaching and politically polarizing measure.

Several of the 12 Democratic governors shared that sense of nervousness-veiled-by-optimism at the National Governors Association meeting Saturday in Milwaukee.

"There's some angst, and you can see that from the decision the administration made a couple weeks ago," said Delaware Gov. Jack Markell. "There's a lot of work to do."

By next Jan. 1, most people will be required to have insurance. States have to set up exchanges by Oct. 1, when uninsured individuals can start buying subsidized private health coverage that would go into effect Jan 1, and businesses with more than 50 employees working 30 or more hours a week were supposed to offer affordable health care to their workers or risk a series of escalating tax penalties.

But businesses said they needed more time, and on July 2, President Barack Obama's administration abruptly extended the deadline one year ? to Jan. 1, 2015.

That caused some Democrats in Congress to worry the program would not be ready on time, as states are building online platforms for their residents to use to comply with the law. Although the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act in June 2012, the Republican-controlled House has voted 40 times since Obama signed the law in 2010 to repeal, defund or scale it back, most recently Friday.

As Congress prepared to head home for a five-week recess, Obama sought to calm jittery Democrats, assuring them that they are "on the right side of history" despite problems with the law's launch.

Republicans have stated openly they plan to use the slow economic recovery and the health care law to attack Democrats in the 2014 congressional elections.

But Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, a Republican, said GOP governors could get blamed next year, even if they worked to meet its requirements, a situation that could be aggravated by Republicans in the U.S. House who continue to hold votes to attack it.

"My approach is not to complain about things, but to get it done best we can," said Branstad, who has been a vocal critic of the law. "It's our responsibility."

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, the governors' host and a possible 2016 Republican presidential prospect, said Obama delayed the employer mandate out of fear that voters would blame Democrats in the 2014 elections if the economy suffered as a result of the new law.

"A cynic would be right to say the reason they pushed back the employer mandate had little to nothing to do with policy and everything to do with politics," Walker said.

Most of the two dozen governors from both parties gathered at the conference expressed confidence that their states would be ready on time, especially Democrats, although they said the work is daunting.

"Any time you go and make this much change in this short a period of time, it does cause headaches," Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper said.

But with that pain comes progress, Hickenlooper and others argued. And those Republicans who have resisted or delayed taking action will pay the price.

Long before election day, the philosophical debate over the bill will have turned into a practical reality for millions of newly insured voters.

"Choosing ideology over jobs and affordable health care is a false choice, and it's an example of the differences between Republicans and Democrats," Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin, a Democrat, said.

Among the challenges states are encountering are the technological requirements to allow buyers to search for insurers, rates and benefits on the exchanges. Others are training state employees to administer the program and marketing it to millions of Americans, all during a time of strained state budgets. Marketing employees were often among the first to lose their jobs.

Despite the headaches, the alternative to the status quo is far worse, Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said.

"Nothing could be more complicated than doing what we were doing before, which was to throw away more and more money on more expensive care for worse results," said O'Malley, a Democrat also mulling a 2016 White House run.

Apple retail stores? polish fades a bit

    Staff Kansas City Business Journal

For the first time in at least four years, Apple Inc. reports a decline in store sales as it enters the 10th month of a search for a leader of its retail operation, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Apple (Nasdaq; AAPL) has looked to its retail stores to goose flattening sales, but the format of its stores has become commonplace, the report says.

CEO Tim Cook has been leading the division as the search for a new leader drags on with no finalist in sight, the report says.

What are the options for right-to-die campaigners?

This week two severely paralysed men, Paul Lamb and another known only as Martin, received the verdicts in their right-to-die challenges at the UK's Court of Appeal. The family of the late Tony Nicholson were also in court, appealing the 2012 decision that he did not have the right to ask a doctor to end his life. New Scientist examines the issue of euthanasia and some of its ethics in more detail.

First of all, how are euthanasia and assisted suicide defined?

Euthanasia means "good death" in Greek. It can be subdivided into several categories.

Active euthanasia occurs when someone ends another person's life to relieve their suffering, for example, by injecting them with lethal drugs. Passive euthanasia is when something keeping a person alive is withdrawn or withheld, such as food and water or turning off a life-support machine. If the person concerned is able to give their consent, this is known as voluntary euthanasia.

In non-voluntary euthanasia, a person is unable to give consent, perhaps because they are too young or in a minimally conscious state. Involuntary euthanasia occurs when someone able to give consent is killed against their will, but this is almost always classified as murder. The legal and moral issues surrounding these two forms are usually more clear-cut than for voluntary euthanasia.

Complicating matters further is assisted suicide. This is when a person carries out their own suicide, helped by someone else. An example of this would be handing a person lethal sedatives that they then take.

What is currently allowed under UK law?

Passive euthanasia is legal, active euthanasia is not. "It's legal to withdraw food and water from someone and let them starve or dehydrate, but illegal to actually administer anything that actively kills them," says Richy Thompson of the British Humanist Association. Assisting a suicide is also illegal.

How does this affect Paul Lamb?

Lamb, who was paralysed in car crash in 1990, could refuse food and water and his subsequent death would leave his family in the clear. This was what Nicholson did in 2012 after he lost a High Court case to allow doctors to end his life. But such a drawn-out death is obviously unattractive.

Lamb wanted the court to rule that any medical professional who helped him end his life would not be charged with murder. Yesterday the Court of Appeal rejected this challenge, saying that Parliament, not High Court judges, should decide whether or not to change the law on euthanasia. Lamb now has the right to appeal.

    What does Martin want?

Like Nicholson, Martin suffers from locked-in syndrome, which means his mind functions but his body is completely immobile. Martin sought to clarify whether a healthcare professional would be prosecuted if they took him abroad to end his life. His family have said they don't want any involvement.

Currently the laws for healthcare professionals travelling to countries where assisted suicide is legal are ambiguous, and yesterday the High Court agreed that they needed clarification.

Martin's case is similar to that of Debbie Purdy, who has multiple sclerosis and whose 2009 case forced a clarification of the laws for family members who took their relatives abroad to end their lives via assisted suicide. To date, no one who has taken a relative to die abroad has been prosecuted.

What is the law in other countries?

Active voluntary euthanasia is legal under strict guidelines in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, but only for residents of those countries. Assisted suicide is legal in Switzerland and in the US states of Oregon, Washington and Vermont.

Why can't Martin go to Dignitas, the Swiss group that helps people carry out assisted suicide?

Martin is still able to swallow so in theory he could visit Dignitas, as he would be able to take the last step that leads to his death. This means the act is classed as assisted suicide rather than active euthanasia, which not legal in Switzerland. A paralysed person who couldn't swallow could not be treated at Dignitas. But existing UK laws mean any healthcare professional who accompanies Martin to Switzerland could potentially be prosecuted.

    What is next for Lamb?

Lamb has already been granted the right of appeal in the UK Supreme Court. He has a further option, too, should he be unsuccessful. "It is possible for him to go to the European Court of Human Rights to fight his case," says Jonathan Robinson of Bindmans LLP, the law firm assisting him. What might happen if that tactic also fails is uncertain.

What are the arguments for and against euthanasia and assisted suicide?

Organisations such as the British Humanist Association argue that a person's life is theirs to do with as they wish, and that those such as Paul Lamb who are incapable of taking their own lives still deserve a dignified death.
