In the event of rain, the concert will move indoors.

Opening for Rant Maggie Rant is Canadian singer/songwriter?Allison Brown.?This songbird with her big, pure voice, offers a?folky throwback mix of traditional songs, modern covers and originals. She?is regularly featured as an arts/music correspondent on CBC Radio Windsor?s?Early Shift, and hostsBorder City Roots?every Monday evening on CJAM 99.1 FM.

Audiences always have a rousing good time at Rant Maggie Rant concerts. From their energetic on-stage presence, to the band?s ability to really connect with its audience, it is self-evident that Celtic music is in the fibres of the band?s heart.

Rant Maggie Rant is a band that likes to mischievously colour outside the prescribed lines. The ensemble moves effortlessly from Irish jigs to Galician munieras, from Scottish marches to Breton an dros, driving them with exotic and syncopated hand-percussion, blues/rock guitar backdrops, revved up tempos, surprising time changes, and unique rhythmic attacks. During their concerts, Rant Maggie Rant will deliver a beautiful traditional ballad, chase it up with an Appalachian-style groove and end with a killer jig or reel.

Traditionalists love their approach, as they respect the time-honoured styles. Drawing on the music from the seven Celtic nations of Ireland, Scotland, Cornwall, Wales, and the lesser known Isle of Mann, Galicia (Spain) and Brittany (France), as well as from Quebec and Canada?s Maritime Region, a legion of new Celtic music listeners and fans are drawn to Rant Maggie Rant?s fusion of World influences, including Latin, Middle Eastern and African hand percussion and rhythms.

Rant Maggie Rant brings together five superbly talented musicians:?Mark Fletcher(whistles, tenor mandola, accordion, Scottish small pipes, guitar, bodhran, background vocals),?Lindsay Schindler?(fiddle, background vocals),?Glen Dias:?(lead vocals, recorders, percussion),?Rob Larose:(percussion ? drum kit, cajon, djembe, dumbek, congas, background vocals) and?Barry James Payne?(guitars, harmonica, background vocals).

Considered one of the best in Canada, fiddler?Lindsay Schindler?has established herself as an electrifying performer: lightning fast and incredibly smooth with contagious energy, as well as a smile that lights up the stage. With a strong bow hand, she drives the music along.

Led by Mark Fletcher, the band has recorded two albums:?World?s Edge?(2009 studio recording) and?Frost & Fire: A Celtic Christmas Celebration!(2011 live recording). Both recordings are?infused with Irish whistles, fiddle, tenor recorder, acoustic and classical guitars, accordion, drums, as well as an array of hand percussion and powered by lead singer Glen Dias? captivating vocals.?The repertoire?ranges from traditional Irish tunes to original, spirit-raising and dance-inducing instrumentals, perfect for the all night kitchen party.

Based in Stratford, Ontario, Rant Maggie Rant has been wowing audiences on the road for the past three years at festivals, concert halls and symphonic stages in Canada and the U.S. with their outstanding artistry and on-stage vibe. A tight, coherent unit, Rant Maggie Rant takes audiences on a unique journey through Celtic music, appealing to both traditionalists and those who enjoy the evolution of sound.

Project unveiling: Monday February 18, 2013
Please send all applications electronically to: culturalaffairs@city.windsor.on.ca

The WindsorEssex Community Foundation and the City of Windsor with funding from the Canadian Department of Heritage is inviting artists to participate in a mural project in Olde Sandwich Towne. There will be two murals created and installed as part of this project.

The murals need to focus on the commemoration of the war of 1812, helping our community to celebrate 200 years of Peace between Canada and the United States of America in an interesting and unique way.

Project Intent:
As part of Windsor?s commemoration of the War of 1812, two murals will be created. One is to be located in Patterson Park (marked with yellow star on attached map) and the other is to be located in Mill Street Park (marked with yellow star on attached map). Application may be made by an individual artist or by a group of artist collaborators. Applications may be made for one or both of the locations of the mural project.

Eligibility:
The competition is open to artists living within Canada.

Budget:
Total budget for the murals project is $25,000 or $12,500 per mural. This fee will be inclusive of all project costs including but not limited to:

Artist fees:
General administration expenses
All materials and labour
Fabrication costs including third contracted or third party fees
Shipping, delivery and installation costs including equipment rentals, labour, utility locates, structural/foundation work (foundation needs to consider wind load) Stamped engineering drawings need to be provided to City of Windsor staff prior to the installation of the piece

Selection criteria:
(25%) Sensitivity and relevance to the commemoration of the War of 1812 and 200 years of Peace between Canada and the United States of America
(25%) Creativity of approach
(25%) Technical Capacity to include : Durability and maintenance requirements, understanding of project and methodology
(25%) Experience to include: capacity to plan and execute a large scale mural, quality of work as demonstrated in documentation of past work

Site Considerations:
Both locations within Olde Sandwich Towne are within community parks and as such consideration must be taken in terms of potential vandalism and graffiti.

There is no requirement for the mural to fill a huge area, but scale is important and attention must be paid to the park setting. The piece can be as large as the artist wishes with the understanding that the artist will be required to provide engineer stamped drawings of their proposed design and installation procedures in order to ensure a secure foundation. Wind loads must also be taken into consideration.

The selected mural will not feature any nudity, contemporary political themes or religious imagery, nor will it promote violence, hatred, or contempt against any group on the basis of colour, race, ancestry, religion, or ethnic origin.

Submission to include: A letter of interest

Current artist curriculum vitae of all collaborative members
Electronic access to an online portfolio
A project description and renderings of their proposed design
Image and identification sheet to include size and materials used in proposed mural Project timelines
Names and contact information of three references familiar with your work
A completed Submission Checklist (included in this document)

* Please note submission will not be returned to artist

The Selection Committee:
The Mural Selection Committee will evaluate the design proposals and will select an artist to fabricate and install their design using the selection criteria listed above.

?Take responsibility for your state of consciousness. This is what the entire teaching really is about.??~ Eckhart Tolle

And so it is with Hridaya Yoga.? This path uses both physical postures (asanas) and seated meditation in order to help us learn to live in a more conscious way.? The approaches and techniques used in Hridaya aim at helping us to develop a more clear and quiet mind, which in turn supports us to live in more awareness of the present moment.

Hridaya Yoga means ?Yoga of the Spiritual Heart? and as our practice unfolds, we learn to experience Aware Presence not from the mind, but from our Centre.? By centering in the Heart, we open ourselves and discover, first of all, the intrinsic beauty and harmony of our being.? Next, we learn to recognize this beauty and harmony even outside of us.The centering in the Spiritual Heart can be easily practiced in any situation and, when it is well mastered, it fits perfectly in our everyday life.

No experience in yoga or meditation is necessary. Every class will include a short lecture meant to deepen your understanding of the Hridaya approach.? The lecture will be followed by an asana practice. The asana practice does not have as a goal the perfection of the physical poses.? Instead of ?doing yoga? our aspiration is of ?being in yoga?; of conscious, mindful living.? The asana practice itself is meant to be meditative rather than a strictly physical workout. It becomes mainly a practice of awareness, oriented inwards.? The asana practice will be followed by a relaxation, followed in turn by a meditation practice of 20 to 30 minutes.? A short explanation of the meditation technique will be given each class.

This is a?4 week introductory course?running Tuesday evenings, 5:30 ? 8:00, from July 10th?through July 31st.? The?cost is $70 or you can ?drop-in? for $20.? Please come in comfortable, loose fitting clothing and bring your own yoga mat.? Some meditation props will be on hand, though you are welcome to bring your own cushions or bench.? This course will be held at the Chatham Cultural Centre, either in the Thames Art Gallery or the theatre itself.

About the Teacher:?Karen Sanchuk began her yoga studies while traveling in India in the spring of 1999. She earned her first Yoga Teacher Certification in March 2004 and has just completed the Advanced (600 hour) Hridaya Meditation and Yoga Teacher Training Course.? She has studied many forms of yoga and meditation and is presently a student of Agama Yoga while continuing meditation studies under the guidance of Sahajananda, the founder of Hridaya Yoga.? Karen?s purpose in teaching is to inspire others to live in a mindful way.

?Raku? is a Japanese word that means ?ease?, ?enjoyment?, or ?fun?. Whether you are a beginner or an expert in working with clay, you will enjoy this course. During this week we will make a number of hand built and thrown pieces in clay. On the last day we will fire them outside in an open air kiln until the glazes are melted, remove the pots and place them into metals boxes with combustible materials. The fire inside the chamber will eat the oxygen around the pots affecting the colours of the glazes making them come out as beautiful blues, reds, or greens with a characteristic crackle effect.

Chris Snedden has been a potter for over 25 years and is currently a ceramics instructor at Lambton College in Sarnia, the London Clay Art Centre and is the Education Program director for Fusion: The Ontario Clay and Glass Centre. His work is shown at festivals and galleries across Ontario and he has completed many notable commissions both public and private.

Dr. Lorenzo Buj presents a user friendly introduction to the kinds of debates that shape contemporary art practice. Through visual presentations and selected readings from classical and contemporary aesthetics, this course examines a number of hot button issues in art and visual culture: is the defence of aesthetic beauty an inherently conservative position, what does the digital age mean for traditional art values, where do artists locate themselves in cultural battles over religious symbols, has race?based or gender driven identity politics played itself out in contemporary art practice?

Dr. Lorenzo Buj received an M.A from the University of Windsor and A Ph. D from the University of Michigan. Since then he has taught at various institutions, offering courses in English literature as well as the visual arts and general humanities. He also writes art criticism.

THE SOULFUL ART OF SORROW HEALED?|??DONNA SNOW

July 4 ? July 28

? During my 25 year teaching career at St. Anne?s High School in Tecumseh, I found myself grieving the loss of 17 wonderful spirited teens I had taught, whose lives had ended too soon. The deep rooted emotional impact had taken a paralyzing toll and eventually drove my career to a standstill. A three year hiatus found me working with conventional therapy methods of medication and counselling only to find a lingering sorrow remained.

It had been years since I had picked up a brush, but on one rather disparaging morning I found myself setting up easel only to find a freedom from grief immerged with every stroke of creativity. It was during this creative process that I found solace, and a welcomed respite from bereavement. Throughout the centuries, artists have used their art to express human despair and found that the greatest suffering inspired their art. Over 30 art pieces were produced during my leave of absence, a telltale sign of immeasurable sorrow. It is not the final result that brought about healing, for every artist is never truly happy with the result of their creativity, but the countless hours and days of painting that offered a diversion from pain, a distraction from turmoil. The countless strokes of my brush speak of the transition to healing.Today, I gladly share what has transpired from my personal art therapy, and dedicate my artworks to Dave, Joey, Kelly, Devon, Mike R., Matt S., George, Andrew L., Lisa, Kim, Chris, Jason, Cory, Mickey, Andrew, Mike, Ryan?never to be forgotten.?

?INLAND EMPIRES?

September 7 ? October 13, 2012
?INLAND EMPIRES?, Mike Marcon (Windsor ON)
Solo show; sculpture and mixed media installation

Opening reception: Friday September 7, 2012, 7:30 PM

Mike Marcon presents mixed-media installations involving themes related to Canadian identity to coincide with the ongoing War of 1812 bicentennial celebrations. Marcon?s work explores the notion of the wilderness as a privileged space, a ?kind of masculine homeland within the greater framework of the nation state?. Found objects, images and sculpture act as a catalyst for the displacement of symbols and myths that continue to inform our ?official? national identity. The juxtaposition of objects and images create a labyrinthine experience and stimulates critical reflection while situating these myths within the viewers? personal narratives.

Drift Launched!

Finally launched and available in the iOS App Store!

Drift helps you get lost in familiar places by guiding you on a walk using randomly assembled instructions. Each instruction will ask you to move in a specific direction and, using the compass, look for something normally hidden or unnoticed in our everyday experiences.

As you find these hidden or unnoticed things, you will be asked to document them with the camera, creating a photographic record of you walk. Drift also keeps track of where and when you took the photos and makes your documentation optionally available for others to view through the Drift website (soon)!

Drift takes up where our algorithmic / psychogeographic walks left off to create an app that encourages you to explore your neighbourhood in an entirely new way. We?re really excited to organize a walk here in Windsor and would love to hear if you do the same in your city!

Drift was developed by Justin Langlois in collaboration with Broken City Lab.

This project was generously supported by the?Ontario Arts Council Media Arts Grant for Emerging Artists.

If you download Drift, let us know what you think. We?re already working on some refinements and new features!
